MV SOCCER ACADEMY AND RECREATIONAL PROGRAM

The aims of MV Youth Soccer are to develop players and coaches in an environment that is fun for all.  In keeping with this philosophy, and after a full year of careful study, research and discussions with leaders of the State Youth Soccer Association and other successful local youth soccer associations, we have decided to institute an academy format in which players participate within an age group and may move back and forth between groups acording to their progress and development.  In making this move, we are hoping to introduce to the island the best practices that are used throughout the country and recommended by all state, national and international soccer organizations.

The major objectives of the Academy are to create a more positive environment for player development and coaches' education.  For players, the emphasis will be on improving each player's skill and technique.  Games will be small-sided, where young players will be allowed to show their abilities in a competitive environment, learn to make on-field decisions without fear and increase their technical development by getting more touches on the ball.  There will be no sitting on the bench in this format!  We now have a trained core of licensed coaches who will use the Academy to mentor and develop new or less experienced coaches by introducing them to the latest and most effective drills and coaching techniques.  Above all, the focus will be on the kids - this is a player-centered, not a coach- or spectator-centered environment, and we will do all we can to promote each player's development and to increase his or her enjoyment of the sport.

The program for the younger players (U-6, U-8 and U-10) will now be under the direction of coordinators whose job will be to present the curriculum and to guide, assist and support the coaches who will be teaching the players.  We also hope to limit the ratio of players to coaches to make the training sessions more manageable and productive, and less overwhelming to our volunteers.

In response to suggestions we received last Fall, we have modified the Academy program for the older players (grades 5-8).  All Academy players will be divided into balanced teams in an on-island league.  All will train together on Thursdays, with an additional team practice on another weekday, and Saturdays will be devoted to 8 v. 8 matches.  The emphasis will be on equal playing time for all, but scores and standings will be kept, followed by a playoff/championship at the end of the season.

The U-13 and U-14 players (7th and 8th grade) who attend the Academy will have the added option of joining full-sided teams that will play home and away games on Saturdays in the Cranberry League on Cape Cod.  Unlike the Spring travel teams, there will be no tryouts for these teams - they are open to all U-13s and U-14s who want to join.  Participation in the Cranberry League is not required - those who do not want to travel will be included in the on-island league. As with the 5th and 6th graders, all 7th and 8th grade players will practice together in the Academy on Thursdays, with an additional practice on another weekday and games on Saturdays.
